I don't know if many people have heard about this rather oddly named cheese. It recently made the news after having a brief appearance in the claymation film
Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit Since then, it's sales have surprisingly quadrupled, emptying out some fromageries of this once little known cheese. I too had been strangely hypnotised by this elusive cheese ever since seeing it in the final scenes of the movie. All it took was the word "Stinking Bishop" to flash on the screen for a mere second, and I knew I had to try it.
I finally got my hands on some of the stuff last week (in Bath of all places, from a royally appointed cheesemonger no less), and what can I say - it really does stink. Stinking Bishop easily surpasses the aromatic ferocity of the most overripe Camembert, but strangely enough, its taste isn't all that strong. The flavour is quite mild, like a brie with a bit more kick. Initially, it was almost tasteless and possessed little odour, but the cheese soon ripened after a full week. Stinking Bishop is also extremely creamy and losses its form like similar soft cheeses, so it might look a bit unpleasant after opening. But the name is cool, and that's a good enough reason for anyone to buy it. So yeah, sounds cool, smells bad, looks ugly, and tastes alright - watch
Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit , then go and try some!
